Boston's Leader Michelle Wu Addresses Trump's Threat to Relocate FIFA World Cup Games from City
Boston's mayor, Mayor Wu, implied that the municipality was ready for a face-off with President Donald Trump over his assertion that he could instruct FIFA to remove World Cup matches from the stadium in Foxborough, located 22 miles southwest of Boston.
Mayor Wu appeared on a Boston-based podcast this week to respond to comments from the White House, which had described her as "far-left." Trump had threatened that he would contact FIFA President Gianni Infantino if Boston did not "clean up its act."
A great deal of it is locked down by agreement so that no one, even the president, can reverse it.
Wu continued, "We're in a world where for attention, for control, for pushing the boundaries ... ongoing threats ... are directed at individuals and communities who stand their ground and comply or follow along to a divisive plan."
Mayor Wu also remarked, "We are going to continue being who we are, and that means, unfortunately, we are going to be in a conversation that is challenging Boston's values." She finished by stressing her support for the Boston, declaring, "Fully committed for Boston."
The President's Statements and FIFA Role
Recently, Infantino was photographed alongside Trump at the Gaza summit in Sharm el-Sheikh. Infantino has also visited the White House and presented World Cup and Club World Cup trophies to the president as gifts.
Earlier, President Trump was asked about unrest in South Boston that included a police car being burned. He responded, "If somebody is doing a bad job, and if I feel there's unsafe conditions, I would call Infantino – the president of FIFA, who's great."
Trump added, "I'd tell him: 'Let's move into another location' and they would do that. He might not prefer it. But he would do it very easily." The president also directly criticized Wu, stating, "Their mayor is ineffective ... she's radical left, and they're taking over parts of Boston. That's a pretty big statement, right?"
Previous Warnings and 2026 World Cup Details
Trump has previously suggested that he would have the similar discussion with the FIFA president about relocating games from other host cities, which are among the 16 locations across North America.
The United States is co-hosting the 2026 tournament with neighboring countries. The expanded tournament is scheduled to be played from June 11 to 19 July in the coming year.
