The accused confessed to 17 criminal counts at Leicester Crown Court on the end of the week

An individual who contaminated sweets with tranquilliser and gave them to youngsters at a summer program in the area has pleaded guilty to sexual crimes against two children who were nine and ten years old.

Jon Ruben was arrested after eight children and an older person experienced illness at the facility in July.

The 76-year-old, from the Nottinghamshire area, confessed to a series of 17 offences when he stood at the courthouse on the end of the week.

Nevertheless, he denied one of the sexual offences he was accused of, which was concerning a young boy.

Ruben was remanded in custody ahead of a further hearing on November 28th.

'Candy game'

The prosecutor, presenting evidence, detailed the defendant's actions to the legal proceedings.

She said his victims were children from difficult backgrounds who were staying at a summer camp which he operated.

The defendant engaged in a "sweet game" with the youngsters, the prosecutor stated, in which he would access the children's bedrooms when they were settling down and request they to ingest treats "rapidly".

She told the court the defendant had conducted this practice with the boys "for many years", and minors had previously fallen ill the next day.

She stated the defendant had been capable of justifying this for many years as the minors being "overstimulated by activities", until his stepson had suspicions in July 2025.

The prosecutor added: "Recently" his stepson had worries about what was going on, for good reason.

"They resolved" to have a look in the individual's items."

The legal counsel stated items including infant oil, ointment and syringes were discovered, and his stepchild notified the law enforcement about his worries.

She explained Ruben went on to engage in the "candy game" with six boys that night - July 26th - and they were everyone unwell the following morning.

"Authorities" had not arrived by that point," she continued.

The police watchdog, the investigative body, had stated that it was reviewing Leicestershire Police's handling of the situation.

Mrs Prior stated the youngsters were unable to walk properly due to their sickness, so the stepson contacted the law enforcement a second time.

She stated Ruben then engaged in the "sweet game" in a space of five minors.
